Fundamentalists are gaining the upper hand in debate class

Fred Clark at [slactivist](http://slacktivist.typepad.com/slacktivist/) links to [this Newsweek article entitled “Cut, Thrust and Christ;
Why evangelicals are mastering the art of college debate”](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11078887/site/newsweek/). Yes, Fred, the article is creepy, but more than that it’s a wake-up call to those of us that don’t subscribe to Reverend Jerry Fallwell’s brand of Christianity.

Falwell’s Liberty College has a varsity debate squad that’s beating Harvard (yes, the Harvard with the Ivy and the Skulls). Conservative Bible colleges all over the United States are spending more on their debate squads and concentrating on winning the argument, but not on being right. Perhaps it’s time the rest of us remind them that talking the fastest and loudest doesn’t convince everyone that they’re actually saying anything.

I’m a 29 year-old web designer, artist, gardener, mother-of-one, wife, and human being, living in the West Park area of Cleveland. Politically, I’d be classified as a flaming liberal. I’m one of those strange people that believes in free expression, human rights, keeping the planet around just a little bit longer, and allowing my kid to grow up to a peaceful society. In a different life I partied hard, drank like a fish, and cursed like a sailor. I still do a few of those things, but with more prudence. I have a fondness for black t-shirts and eyeliner, hairdye, jeans and workboots. I like to go barefoot when frostbite’s not a threat. I tend to be a little sarcastic.

I’m a recovering fundamentalist, a techno-junkie, a DIY-er and a research addict. I devour books as if they’re pints of Ben and Jerry’s. This sickens my spouse.

Amen to that sister!

This is one of Trevor’s and mine’s pet peeves. Especially when you make a solid point that punches a hole through everything they say and they ignore it and keep yelling. Then they think if you leave the debate they won. No, we have better things to do then talk to a noisy windbag.
